UK Census Dates
1841 was the first time that the head of each household was given a form to fill
in on behalf of everyone in the dwelling on a set day.
The 1841 census was taken on the night of 7 June and gave the total population as 15,914,000.
The 1851 census was taken on 30 March and gave the total population as 17,922,768.
The 1861 census was taken on the night of 7 April and gave the total population as 20,066,000.
The 1871 census was taken on the night of 2 April 1871 and gave the total population as 22,723,000
The 1881 census was taken on the night of 3 April 1881 and gave the total population as 25,974,000.
The 1891 census was taken on the night of 5 April 1891 and gave the total population as 28,999,725.
The 1901 census was taken on 31 March and gave the total population as 32,527,843.
